You can attack the problem of cramps during your period or cramps before your period (and even after your period) with food.
Food is something natural that can be used to your advantage. What’s funny is that food is so natural as a cure for many illnesses that many doctors overlook it not only for severe menstrual cramp relief but also for other issues.
There are many different directions you could go to use food to your advantage to alleviate menstrual cramps. Here are some of them:
1. Go on an Anti-Inflammatory Diet
An anti-inflammatory diet is one that contains a lot of foods that cause inflammation in the body. This list includes sugar, alcohol, processed foods, GMO foods, foods with chemicals and preservatives added to them, packaged foods, fast foods and meats raised in an ungodly way.
It’s a tall order to remove all these foods – and the best way to do it is one group at a time. The anti-inflammatory diet will definitely reduce your cramps during your period – but it’s over time. You can expect results in about two menstrual cycles.
2. Stop Eating All the Foods You are Sensitive To
The best way to do this is to get an ALCAT test for food sensitivities. Then follow the rotation diet, removing all foods that you are highly sensitive to for a period of three to four months. Over time, you may be able to reintroduce foods into your diet.
Cramps will stop in about 45 days with this method (for most people).
3. Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and veggies provide a lot of medicinal constituents that work on multiple levels. All their constituents haven’t been discovered yet but some of them will impact menstrual cramps through the inflammation pathways of the body. Studies are now being done on the consumption of more than 30 servings a day for different conditions. This tells us you simply can’t get enough of them.
Another way to get in a lot of fruits and veggies into your diet is to consume capsules of dehydrated fruits and vegetables. Generally the amount to take is up to 12 capsules daily that can provide about 34 servings a day. Wow, that’s enough to create big changes in PMS.
4. Take a Period Vitamin Along with Any of the Other Changes on This List
Let’s face it – we all can’t possibly get all the vitamins and minerals we need on a daily basis from food. And if we could, it still wouldn’t be able to reverse any deficiencies that were pre-existing, as these would need a much greater amount.
A Period Vitamin is a one a day vitamin. It contains vitamins, minerals, and herbs you need to support the body during the childbirth years. The extra provided on a daily is enough to help many women erase the PMS symptoms they have.
5. Add Fish Oil or Omega 3 Rich Fish To Your Diet
Fish oil and omega 3 fats interfere with inflammatory compounds created in the body. By doing this, they can decrease your cramps during the period bring pain relief. The dosage of fish oil to start with is one tablespoon daily.
6. Decrease the Consumption of High AGEs Foods
AGEs are advanced glycation endproducts. These are molecular fragments that are produced from foods that are processed at high temperatures. All foods that are processed – especially boxed cereals, hot dogs and pizza are exceptionally high in AGEs. The problem is that they will accelerate any existing disease process that is occurring in the body. PMS is included in the terminology of “any existing disease” since PMS is not normal.
7. Stop Sugar Consumption
Sugar is a villain when it gets inside the body. It robs you of your B vitamins and minerals, the same ones that when low in the body will cause period cramps. Try removing sugar from your diet for period cramp relief.
8. Stop Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol is another villain in the body. Alcohol also robs you of your B vitamins and minerals. It causes swelling in the body and inflammation – and this aggravates period cramps. You’ll lessen your period cramps if you give up alcohol. And think about it – do you really need it to be social? If eliminating it makes a difference in how to relieve period cramps, then why not do it?
