If you get a PMS headache or migraine every time you have your period or are getting close to having it, it gives you nothing to look forward to during this whole week of the month. That’s a bit sad but this article is here to give you hope – and relief.
In some ways, having a headache before, during or after menstruation is similar to being a man and having a headache. That’s because there are anatomical and physiological reasons why people get headaches. As examples, some potential causes are the following: forward head position (common in people who use the computer a lot and struggle to see the screen), low blood sugar, low protein levels, trigger points in the neck, back and shoulder muscles, and hormone imbalances).
Here are 3 tips that include a home remedy to help you naturally get rid of a headache:
1. Headache Causes #1: Trigger Points
Recently, I read one medical study that said that over 90% of headaches were caused by trigger points in the neck and back. This idea makes a lot of sense because the hormonal fluctuations of the body during your period could contribute to activating the trigger points that give you your pre-period headache.
A trigger point is a knot found in your muscles that interferes with blood flow. For example, you could have a trigger point in your neck muscle between the back of the skull and the neck or between the neck and your shoulder. It feels like a rock. Here’s the cure for the trigger point: take a pencil and press the eraser side down onto the trigger point. It will hurt temporarily, but the compression on a trigger point is exactly enough to start to make the trigger point dissolve. It may take up to 2 minutes for the trigger point to dissolve, and you will feel an intensification of your headache, proving that the two are related.
Now the chances are good that you have more than one trigger point. In research studies, six trigger points were worked on those who had a headache over a 15-minute period of time and the headaches were relieved.
2. Headache Causes #2: Muscle Tension
Muscle tension causes neck muscles to contract, which decrease blood and oxygen flow to the head. You can decrease your muscle tension by using an essential oils/almond oil blend that you create yourself.
First purchase a small 4 ounce bottle of almond oil at the natural health food store. Pick up a small ½ ounce or 1 ounce bottle of lavender oil, rose oil, and/or chamomile essential oils. When you get home, place about a tablespoon of almond oil into the palm of your hand. Add a drop or two of the essential oils you purchased. Mix and rub it into your tight muscles. This will begin to relax your muscles that are contracted and your headache will be relieved. Get rid of the tension and you get rid of the headache.
3. Headache Causes #3: Poor diet
There are so many vitamin and mineral deficiencies that cause headaches that we can’t list them here. Magnesium, iron, calcium, vitamin A and iodine are some of them.
Magnesium deficiency is especially tied in with headaches, even the migraines that occur with nausea. If you’re taking a supplementary period vitamin, you will get extra amounts of vitamins and minerals that can cure your headache.
For example, about 300 to 500 mg magnesium may be enough to melt a headache in a few hours. But don’t forget that you need to check your diet and improve it. Foods high in vitamins and minerals are the ones you may be eating the least – and these include spinach, kale, lettuces, etc. Eat a big salad daily and use it as treatment for your headache. It will help immensely.
