Has your boyfriend, best friend or your family told you that you are emotional during PMS? Is it really true that there is a connection between PMS and emotions? If so, then what causes the PMS emotions?
To answer these questions, you have to understand about your liver. Your liver could be called the seat of your emotions although people generally regard the heart or the different parts of the brain as the seat of the emotions. This is because it’s your liver that is responsible for creating the emotions which are actually made within the body.
Let’s say you want to be happy. Where does the happiness come from? Probably an initial thought, but then the actual emotion has to be created – and it’s chemical in nature. The emotions factory is your liver, the same place where your hormones are created. Your liver also breaks down your emotions. Thus, if it’s not working at optimal capacity, you can expect that your emotions will not all be processed in a timely fashion.
Any bad emotions such as rage, fear, vengefulness, jealousy, hatred, sadness, and depression that hang around in the body for too long end up causing you a lot of grief and trouble. They help produce “loop to loop” thinking where you keep thinking the same thoughts over and over again. The problem of course is that the thoughts never have a solution. They only contribute to more of the same of what they are. Fear begets more fear. Sadness begets more sadness. And so on.
Interestingly, if you have also asked the question, “Can PMS cause sensitivity to smell?” the answer would be yes. Smells are chemical compounds that also have to be broken down by the liver. The same question, why am I so emotional during PMS? Has a similar answer.
The answer to all these PMS emotional symptoms – PMS emotional relief so to speak – is not to simply manage the PMS emotions, but to overcome them by dealing with the root of the problem, which is physical. To control PMS emotions, you control the body. Knowing how to deal with PMS emotions is simply knowledge – but knowing how to control the body is where the true power lies.
5 Natural Remedies for PMS Emotions
If you need situational control, you can take herbs. For example, if you’re in the middle of a PMS emotional crying bout, it’s easy enough to drink a cup of herb tea. Which ones should you drink? You could start with either chamomile or in extreme situations, use valerian tea. Remember to sweeten up the valerian tea though since it can have an off taste to it. The way to do this is to remember the general rule for making a cup of tea – use one teaspoon herb to one cup boiling water. The valerian tea will act as a PMS emotional radical rescue remedy.
Three other solutions you could use will take some time to manifest changes. For example, a colon cleanse will often start to give relief quickly but the real results are seen a few weeks later. With a colon cleanse, you’ll take 1-2 capsules of the herbal formula with every meal.
Another example is that of a liver cleanse. This is obviously the way to eliminate the whole issue of emotions during your period. A liver cleanse will contain herbs such as milk thistle, artichoke, and/or boldo or even epazote. Generally, one or two of the liver cleanse capsules are taken once or twice daily, depending on the manufacturer instructions. Finish the bottle of them (this could take 1-2 months), as you will need long-term support.
A Period Vitamin also may help. It will contain B vitamins, other vitamins and minerals that combat emotional problems connected with B vitamin deficiencies. A period vitamin is taken only once daily.
There are other things you can do to decrease emotionality, such as removing toxins from the body. This will take additional load off the liver so it can more effectively detoxify itself. For example, there’s a medical spa footbath you can find on ebay that pulls toxins out through the feet into the footbath water. This could be done once a week for about 8 weeks to clean up the internal environment of the body and thus make it easier to deal with emotions.
